Fixing Surface Pro MBR without Windows disc

I recently did an experiment on my Surface Pro 2 to see how it bodes with Linux. Given this title, you can make assumptions.

Fortunately, Windows 8 (and the recovery partition on the Surface Pro) contain a good chunk of recovery tools. With a little bit of poking around, I got my SP2 booting properly again.

Here's the steps:

  1. Go to the PC settings (Windows+I or swipe from the right), press Update and Recovery, then press Recovery. Do an Advanced Reboot.
  2. In the menu, you want to change your startup options. This will result in a reboot.
  3. After the system reboots, press F10, then load the recovery environment.
  4. You now have more options on the blue menu. Open up a command prompt and run this to clear it up:

bootrec /FixMBR

Magic. Close the prompt and call it a day.
